FAQ: Enabling Debug Logging

    Author: support
Subject: Enabling Debug Logging
Posted: Jul/10/2008 at 3:18pm

There are multiple debug options. The debugging modules can be defined to capture specific information from specific modules or to perform logging of certain tasks. The most common purposes for debugging are to find the source of a failure or connectivity problem. While debugging is rarely necessary, it can be an important tool in evaluating a problem being encountered.

While reviewing a log, most of the information will not make any sense to anyone other than the engineers who have designed the software or hardware. Also, it is normal to sometimes have an 'error' in a log file such as an attempt to open a registry key or file that has not yet been created or is not necessary to be available.

Log files created by debugging will continue to grow in size until it is disabled and the modules are restarted (sometimes requirng a system restart). Unless otherwise instructed, it is generally not necessary nor recommended that users enable debugging otherwise.

All debug options are configured through the system registry. Therefore, a registry editing tool such as regedit.exe is needed. In almost all cases, you should have local admin access. Also, some registry settings are user specific, so take care when logged in as anything other than a local admin with domain admin rights. Registry access permissions can be adversely affected if you make changed that are not necessary.

The registry settings take affect when a service or module starts, thus frequently a system reboot is required or system service restart is required. When debugging components, the specific systems will need to have the affected options enabled... for example, if there is a client connectivity issue, it may be required that the debug is enabled on both the server and the client. To avoid too much debug information, specific modules may be specified. In some cases, there are variable levels of debug information that can be configured as well.

Some of the registry information may already be present and may only require a few tweaks/changes.

Examples of enabling debugging:

Example 1: Finding a problem with a class 2 modem device

Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\2Pointl\Messenger\Debug key.

under Debug key, create a string value named "Script" and add the values: FAXLINE,MAIN,MODEMCHANNEL,
under Debug key, create a string Value Name "Enable" and add value: FAXSERVE
under Debug key, for string Value Name Path, input data c:\MsgrTemp\debug.txt (or some other path to a text file)

create or verify that the C:\MsgrTemp directory (or other path previously specified exists)
From the Services control panel applet, select 2Point Advanced Fax Server and right click to select STOP (Press F5 to Refresh and make sure it stops)
Repeat the process and select START

Attempt to duplicate the problem that gave reason for enabling these debug options at least 2 times.
Go to the output directory (C:\MsgrTemp\ for example) and if requested by support, send the files contained therein.

Example 2: Finding a problem with a Brooktrout intelligent fax board

Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\2Pointl\Messenger\Debug key.

under Debug key, create a string value named "Script" and add the values: BROOKCHANNEL,
under Debug key, create a string Value Name "Enable" and add value: FAXSERVE
under Debug key, for string Value Name Path, input data c:\MsgrTemp\debug.txt (or some other path to a text file)

create or verify that the C:\MsgrTemp directory (or other path previously specified exists)
From the Services control panel applet, least 2 times.
Go to the output directory (C:\MsgrTemp\ for example) and if requested by support, send the files contained therein.

Example 3: Resolving a problem specifically in the Exchange connector

Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\2Pointl\Messenger\Debug key.

under Debug key, create a string Value Name "Enable" and add value: Detail
under Debug key, create a string Value Name "Modules" and add value: M3ExGw
To add modules to this list, enter multiple entries separated by commons. Example:

M3ExGw,EXPLORER,M3HostSrv,

under Debug key, for string Value Name Path, input data c:\MsgrTemp\debug.txt (or some other path to a text file)

create or verify that the C:\MsgrTemp directory (or other path previously specified exists)
From the Services control panel applet, select 2Point Exchange Connector and right click to select STOP (Press F5 to Refresh and make sure it stops)
Repeat the process and select START

Attempt to duplicate the problem that gave reason for enabling these debug options at least 2 times.
Go to the output directory (C:\MsgrTemp\ for example) and if requested by support, send the files contained therein.

NOTE: The same 'Modules' declaration in the example above will filter all but those modules specified. If not specified, all modules are logged. The Enable key can be set to 'Detail' to include the most information or to 'On' to specify basic information (less logging). It can be set to 'Off' to disable the setting altogether without deleting the debug options. Not that when set to 'Off' the change as with others will not take affect until the application or service is restarted. Some modules of the 2Point software are actually modules running inside the context of another executable. The shell client extension for example would be logged as module 'EXPLORER'

Edited by support - Jul/13/2008 at 11:33am
